How A Tesla Cybertruck Tows Against Diesel Ram Cummins, Ford F-150 XLT
After much deliberation, The Fast Lane (TFL) network of YouTube channels finally made the decision to purchase a Tesla Cybertruck. It was only a matter of time before TFL Truck tested the new electric truck by towing it on the Ike Gauntlet.
This particular test featured two other major players in the truck market for comparison. Not the F-150 Lightning or the Silverado EV. Instead, the Cybertruck went head-to-head with a V8 Ford F-150 XLT and a diesel Ram Cummins.
The Cybertruck offers impressive performance and cutting-edge technology, but its practicality as a truck compared to other electric models has been inconsistent. While the Silverado EV may be a better choice for heavy-duty work or long-distance towing, the Cybertruck excels in local towing and hauling.
In this test, the combined weight of the trailer and cargo totaled 8,800 lbs. The Turbo Diesel Ram Cummins boasts 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque, optimized for towing and hauling. The F-150 XLT is equipped with a 5-liter V8 engine producing 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, with advanced towing technology.
During the uphill and downhill sections of the test, trucks faced challenges due to the 11,160-foot elevation. The Cybertruck’s regenerative braking system helped maintain speed and recharge the battery on the descent, showcasing its efficiency.
While the Cybertruck exhibited stability and comfort during the descent, drawbacks like limited towing mirror functionality were noted. It regenerated 6.1 kWh of energy during the test, falling behind other Electric vehicles in terms of regenerative braking efficiency.
On the uphill climb, the Ram Cummins excelled in power and finished first, albeit consuming more energy. The Ford F-150 faced power loss due to its non-turbocharged engine but performed well enough to complete the climb.
The Cybertruck showcased rapid acceleration and strong performance on the uphill climb, maintaining efficiency consistent with other electric trucks. Despite some concerns, the hosts praised the Cybertruck for specific short-distance towing applications.
Overall, the Cybertruck provided a competitive performance in the test but showed room for improvement in regenerative braking efficiency. Its acceleration and efficiency make it a compelling choice for certain towing scenarios, emphasizing the versatility of electric trucks.
