Kia Global EV Retail Sales Hit A New Record In March 2024
Kia stated that its global vehicle sales in March totaled 272,026, which is 2.4% lower than the previous year. During the first quarter of 2024, total sales exceeded 760,000, a 1% decrease from the previous year. The company reported that sales of all-Electric cars increased rapidly, with a particularly strong showing last month.
In March, Kia’s retail sales of all-electric cars reached 19,061 units, representing a 79% increase from the previous year. This marked a new monthly record for the company. The share of Electric vehicles within Kia’s total volume also improved to 6.9%, up from 4.7% the year before.
Wholesale shipments of Kia’s E-GMP-based models, including the EV6 and EV9 produced in South Korea and the EV5 in China, totaled 12,318 units in March, showing an 11% increase year-over-year. The wholesale shipments were broken down as follows: 3,554 units of the EV9, 8,441 units of the EV6, and 323 units of the EV5 (in China). In terms of year-to-date wholesale BEV sales for Kia, the EV5 reached 1,251 units, the EV6 reached 23,307 units (down 13%), and the EV9 reached 11,150 units. Overall, E-GMP BEV shipments totaled 35,710 units, up 33% year-over-year.
The delays in the recent Kia sales reports have led to some uncertainty regarding the Q1 sales results. However, based on the available information, it is estimated that retail EV sales for Kia in Q1 exceeded 45,000, representing a 69% increase year-over-year. Wholesale shipments of E-GMP-based models in the same period surpassed 35,000 units.
In 2023, Kia’s wholesale shipments of E-GMP-based electric cars expanded by 59% year-over-year, totaling 132,711 units. Retail EV sales of all models exceeded 130,000.
