Jeep’s Electric SUVs Could Get Gas Engines After All
In 2018, Jeep sold 973,227 vehicles, but by 2023, sales had dropped to 643,000 units, marking five consecutive years of decline for the company. Despite discontinuing the affordable Renegade and Cherokee models, new CEO Antonio Filosa has a plan to turn things around. The upcoming Wagoneer S and Recon models will be introduced as electric SUVs, with the possibility of gasoline versions also in the works.
Jeep’s CEO revealed to Automotive News that the electric SUVs could be accompanied by traditional gasoline-powered versions, thanks to the versatile STLA Large platform shared with the new Dodge Charger. This platform allows for both electric and internal combustion engine options. Additionally, Alfa Romeo‘s next-generation Giulia and Stelvio will utilize this platform as well.
With a focus on reaching one million annual sales in the United States, Jeep is considering producing gas-powered derivatives of the Wagoneer S and Recon to cater to a potentially decreased demand for Electric vehicles. Despite the ambitious sales goal, introducing more affordable models to replace the Renegade and Cherokee could help boost overall sales. The European Jeep Avenger might also be an option for the US market, although it was not mentioned in the interview.
The high-performance Wagoneer S, capable of 600 horsepower and a sub-three-and-a-half-second 0-60 mph time, is set to debut in the third quarter of the year for a limited run in the 2024 model year. Offering about 400 miles of range and all-wheel drive with a dual-motor setup, this model is positioned to attract buyers looking for a sophisticated electric SUV. The smaller Recon model is expected to follow later in the year and will appeal to Wrangler customers interested in electrified off-road vehicles.
Looking ahead, Jeep has plans for five new or refreshed models by 2025, including the upcoming Wagoneer S and the decision to remove the V8 engine from select models for the 2024 model year.
