Kia Affordable Subcompact EV Crossover Seen Testing (Updated)
Ever since the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 were released, Hyundai Motor Group has been consistently launching new and highly sought-after EV models. In October 2023, Kia took the next step in their EV expansion at their first-ever EV Day event in Seoul, where they revealed a range of EV concept cars designed to cater to all segments of the market. Among the models unveiled were the EV3, EV4, and EV5.
Although the subcompact EV2 was announced at the event, it was not showcased. Kia’s co-CEO and President Ho Sung Song mentioned that the EV2 is anticipated to be priced at or below $30,000, making it one of the brand’s most budget-friendly electric models. The company’s goal is to establish a strong presence in Europe and other regions where compact cars are popular.
While official images or concepts of the EV2 have not been released yet, there are reports from Short Car claiming to have spotted a camouflaged EV2 on the roads of South Korea. The footage did not reveal much new information, but it did hint at the possibility of the model being intended for release in countries with left-hand drive systems like the UK and India.
Short Car suggests that the EV2 could potentially replace the Kia Ray EV at a price point of around $15,000, although official pricing details have not been confirmed. Considering that the Kia Ray EV was only recently launched, it may be some time before the EV2 hits the market if it is indeed meant to be a successor.
Overall, there is still much unknown about Kia’s upcoming subcompact EV crossover, including its design, pricing, and target markets. The Kia EV2 appears poised to make a significant impact in the affordable EV sector, but until more details are released, it’s challenging to make definitive statements. We eagerly await more information from Kia to see how the EV2 will live up to expectations.
