Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV U.S. Sales Stable In Q1 2024
During the first quarter of 2024, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) reported vehicle sales of 28,403 in the United States, representing a 36% year-over-year increase. The brand’s sales were driven by the Outlander PHEV, the only plug-in hybrid model offered by Mitsubishi in the US. Sales of the Outlander PHEV remained stable above 1,500 units per quarter.
In Q1, Mitsubishi sold 1,522 Outlander PHEVs, a 5% decrease compared to the previous year. This model accounted for 5.4% of the brand’s total volume and about 10% of the Outlander family sales. In comparison, in 2023, Mitsubishi sold 6,681 Outlander PHEVs in the U.S., marking a 241% year-over-year increase.
The current Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features a 20-kilowatt-hour battery and an EPA all-electric range of 38 miles (420 miles total). The starting price for the Outlander PHEV is $40,345 with an additional destination/handling charge. Mitsubishi plans to introduce new all-electric models by 2028, potentially in partnership with Nissan under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
Overall, Mitsubishi will need to expand its electrified vehicle offerings to stay competitive in the growing plug-in segment. This strategy may include new all-electric models and plug-in hybrids in the coming years.
