Demand For EVs Is Still Outpacing Plug-In Hybrids: Report
The growth of EV sales is being closely watched as it appears to be slowing down. Some people see this as a sign that EV adoption is stalling and are suggesting that plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) may be the way forward. However, new data from Bloomberg NEF reveals a more nuanced picture of the situation. While PHEV sales are increasing, EVs still hold a larger share of the market and are growing at a faster rate.
According to Corey Cantor, an EV analyst at Bloomberg NEF, PHEV sales grew by an impressive 48% from 2022 to 2023. But this growth pales in comparison to the 51% increase in sales of battery-Electric vehicles (BEVs) during the same period. In the U.S., full EV sales surpassed 1.1 million units, far outnumbering the 281,000 PHEVs sold.
The report highlights that Stellantis group products dominate the PHEV market, capturing 46% of total sales. Models like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid are top performers in this segment. Toyota and Lexus follow with a 15% share, while Kia, Hyundai, and Volvo make up the remainder, although their EV sales surpass their PHEV figures.
While PHEVs are not deemed a lost cause, the data suggests that there are still unanswered questions regarding their appeal. Despite being marketed as a solution for range anxiety among potential EV buyers, the cost-effectiveness and practicality of PHEVs remain uncertain. The higher cost of PHEV batteries, nearly three times that of EV batteries, presents a significant hurdle. The limited availability of tax credits for PHEVs further complicates their financial viability.
The technology behind PHEVs still seems underdeveloped compared to BEVs and traditional hybrids. Models like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe lack range and efficiency when not running in full EV mode. To attract more buyers, there’s a need for more sophisticated, competitively priced PHEVs with extended electric range, coupled with thorough education on their proper usage.
In conclusion, while PHEVs have their place in the electrified vehicle market, there are challenges that need to be addressed before they can reach their full potential. Aiming to provide a comprehensive solution for consumers who may not be ready to switch to full EVs, PHEVs still have some distance to cover in terms of market acceptance and technological advancement.
