The Electric Mercedes G-Class Has a Very Convoluted Name
Finally, the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been given a name. Despite initial reports suggesting the off-roader would not use the EQ branding, it has been confirmed that the two letters will remain. However, instead of EQG as initially thought, the production model will be called the “G580 with EQ Technology” and will make its debut at Auto China in Beijing this month.
With the name “G580,” it is safe to assume that this model will have more power than the G550. The regular G-Class for the 2025 model year is shifting to a mild-hybrid, inline-six engine producing 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. While the electric G is not expected to surpass the power of the AMG G63 with its V-8 engine delivering 577 hp and 627 lb-ft.
The electric G-Class is predicted to feature four motors—one for each wheel—and an estimated battery capacity of 100.0-kilowatt-hours, providing a range of over 200 miles. Optional high-density battery packs with silicon anode chemistry are expected in 2025. Additionally, it will have 32-degree approach and 35-degree departure angles, as well as 9.8 inches of ground clearance.
The G580 with EQ Technology will not be Mercedes’ first quad-motor EV, as that title goes to the SLS AMG Electric Drive from 2012. The vehicle is expected to weigh less than 7,716 pounds, according to G brand boss Emmerich Schiller.
During the Auto China event, Mercedes will also unveil an updated EQS and the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance with a plug-in hybrid V-8 setup. Other new show premieres from Maybach and the E-Class lineup are also planned.
The GT63 S E Performance will debut on April 20 at the AMG Brand Night Event in Shanghai, while the electric G will be revealed on April 24. Auto China officially kicks off on April 25 with the first press day.
