Yamaha Has Patented an All-Electric Motocross Motorcycle
Yamaha has recently filed a patent for a new electric motocross bike, signaling the growing acceptance of electric motorcycles in the mainstream market. The benefits of electric bikes, such as instantaneous torque, silent operation, and reduced maintenance costs, have been recognized by manufacturers in the off-road world. Yamaha is building on their TY-E trials bike platform to develop their new electric motocrosser.
One of the key features of Yamaha’s upcoming electric motocross bike is a torsion damper integrated into the transmission. This innovative device consists of two rotors connected by springs, accumulating potential energy to provide a short burst of extra force to the rear wheel when needed, enhancing acceleration without adding excess weight to the driveline. Yamaha’s engineers will need to seamlessly integrate this technology into the bike’s controls, possibly similar to the holeshot devices seen in MotoGP.
With advancements like Yamaha’s torsion damper and Zero Motorcycles’ Vehicle Control System, which simulates a clutch for added control, electric motorcycles are evolving to offer improved performance, acceleration, and overall feel. The push towards high-performance electrification is an exciting development in the industry, with manufacturers investing resources to enhance the riding experience for electric bike enthusiasts.
