Sen. Sherrod Brown Urges President Biden to Ban Chinese Electric cars
Senator Sherrod Brown, chair of the Senate Banking Committee, has called for President Joe Biden to ban imports of Chinese-made electric cars to the US. He believes that Chinese Electric vehicles pose an “existential threat” to the American auto industry and that allowing them into the country could have serious consequences.
The National Security Risk Posed by Chinese Cars
In February, the White House announced that it was opening an investigation into whether Chinese cars pose a national security risk. There are concerns that the technology in Chinese-made cars could collect sensitive data on drivers and passengers, posing a potential threat to US infrastructure. This has led to calls for steep tariffs or outright bans on Chinese electric vehicles.
China’s Dominance in the Auto Industry
China is the world’s largest producer of cars and is vying with Japan to be the biggest exporter of vehicles. However, the number of Chinese cars on US roads is currently low due to the 27.5% tariff imposed on them. Senator Brown and other lawmakers are worried about the impact of Chinese cars entering the American market and potentially undermining the domestic auto industry.
US-China Trade Relations
The US and China have been engaged in a trade war since 2018, with tariffs imposed on billions of dollars’ worth of each other’s goods. The Biden administration has largely kept those tariffs in place, and tensions between the two countries continue to simmer. Both sides have expressed concerns about unfair trade practices and have taken steps to protect their own industries from foreign competition.
