Italian automaker Alfa Romeo will assemble a new battery electric car in the US. The car will be more massive than the Stelvio crossover, which is currently the largest product in the brand’s portfolio.
The place of production for the new SUV has been determined. It will be an assembly complex in Detroit, which also makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. The next-generation Grand Cherokee and Durango will be based on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, as will Alfa Romeo’s new flagship. The Grand Cherokee begins production in 2026 and the Durango in 2027. According to Alfa Romeo’s leaked plans, 1,961 units of the new SUV are expected to be produced in 2027 and 10,715 units in 2028. writes Autoblog.
The new generation of compact crossover Stelvio and medium-sized Giulia, which will also be created on the STLA Large platform, will be assembled at the company’s plant in Italy. This will allow them to be advertised as products with an Italian background, which the new electric flagship, similar to a crossover sedan, cannot boast of.
The new SUV is also expected to be exactly 10 inches longer than the Stelvio, which at 184.5 inches is currently the largest product in the brand’s portfolio. This will allow it to compete with the BMW X5, which measures 195 inches by 78.9 inches.
Jeep and Dodge are going to release hybrid and pure electric versions. The next-generation X5, due in August 2026, will also offer internal combustion engine and all-electric models. Alfa Romeo will instead offer purely electric options.
We will remind, in the middle of 2022, the boss of Alfa Romeo, Jean-Philippe Imparato, announced that the Italian automaker will develop a new battery electric car in the United States, which will be presented in 2027. Six months later, last January, Imparato shared a few specs of the upcoming SUV. He called it a high-performance SUV with engines that produce 300 to 800 horsepower in the standard range and around 1,000 horsepower in the Quadrifoglio trim. Its 800-volt architecture was also claimed to provide a recharge time of up to 18 minutes.
