The additional weight and high torque of electric vehicles affect the life of car tires. It is noted that their tires wear out much faster than those of cars with internal combustion engines. Analysts state that the rapid wear of tires has become an unpleasant surprise for many owners of electric cars.
“The widening gap in satisfaction between EVs and gasoline-powered vehicles highlights the opportunity for tire manufacturers and automakers to educate EV owners about the performance difference”said Ashley Edgar, JD Power's senior director of benchmarking.
It is noted that intensive tire wear also leads to increased emissions. Tire dust can cause breathing problems, kidney disease and neurological damage. Since electric vehicle tires wear out faster, they are more environmentally damaging in this regard.
Unfortunately, the nature of EV tire production makes this a difficult problem to solve. JD Power reportsthat the goals of maximizing range and optimizing tire wear are at odds with each other, creating a significant challenge for the automotive industry that will become even more important as the EV segment grows.
