The deployment of charging stations in the EU is 8 times behind the current needs. Given the pace of sales of electric cars, the problem will worsen in the future.
According to a report by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), from 2017 to 2023, sales of electric vehicles in the EU grew three times faster than the installation of charging stations.
In 2023 more than 150,000 public charging stations were installed in the EU (on average, less than 3,000 per week), the total number of which exceeded 630,000.
However, according to the plans of the European Commission, 3.5 million charging stations should be installed in the EU by 2030.
Achieving this goal will mean the opening of about 410,000 public charging points per year (or almost 8,000 per week).
However, ACEA estimates that 8.8 million chargers will be needed by 2030. To achieve this, 1.2 million chargers need to be installed per year (or over 22,000 per week).
