Installation of DC fast charging stations for electric vehicles is gaining momentum in the US – in the first quarter of 2024, their number increased by 7.6% to almost 8,200.
Bloomberg Green analyzed data federal Alternative Fuels Data Center and found that about 600 DC fast-charging stations came online in the first quarter of 2024.
So there is currently one DC fast charging station for every 15 gas stations in the US, and Tesla Superchargers make up more than a quarter of those.
Tesla Superchargers are eligible for funding from the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Development Program if they are CCS compatible.
Retailers play an important role in the deployment of fast chargers; 10 opened at Buc-ee's and nine at Wawa in the first quarter of 2024.
Bloomberg also notes, that most of the stations opened in the central states. Indiana, for example, launched 16 new fast charging stations between January and April. Missouri and Tennessee cut the ribbon on 13 new stations, while Alabama gained 11 new connection locations.
