General Motors subsidiary GM Defense has developed batteries for electric vehicles that could potentially be used for military purposes. Details revealed by Teslarati publication.
Batteries for electric cars will be tested by scientists from the University of Texas at Arlington and the Philadelphia unit of the US Navy's Surface Warfare Center. The US Department of Defense will fund the research in conjunction with UTA's Pulsed Energy and Energy Laboratory. The military hopes to understand how well EV batteries perform under different charge and discharge conditions during missions.
The main goal of the study is to determine whether commercial batteries can be used for electric vehicles that require very high power. The Ministry of Defense hopes that based on the obtained results, it will be possible to improve batteries for military use, capable of withstanding harsh operating conditions.
“The work carried out in this new project will provide valuable insights into the performance and design features required for high-capacity batteries. We intend to promote the advancement of energy technologies that provide the Ministry of Defense with enhanced capabilities.”– said a representative of GM Defense.
