Xiaomi, a Chinese electronics manufacturer, unveiled their first electric vehicle, the SU7, in China and began accepting orders through an app. Analysts estimate the price of the SU7 to be around 300,000 yuan (€37,000, $40,000), making it competitive in the market. The company aims to be among the top five global automakers within the next two decades.
Known for their smartphones and electronic devices, Xiaomi plans to integrate transportation into their product lineup. By connecting the car with their phones and other technologies, Xiaomi hopes to create a seamless “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem.
However, criticism from the EU and US has arisen regarding China’s EV aspirations. Concerns regarding Chinese subsidies benefiting EVs made in China and potential data privacy issues with Chinese-made connected cars have been raised. US President Joe Biden has expressed concern over China flooding the market with its vehicles, posing potential risks to national security. In response, China filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization alleging that US subsidies unfairly disadvantage Chinese products.
