Chevrolet Silverado EV Shows Blistering Charging Speed And Consistency
The Chevrolet Silverado EV 4WT, equipped with the 24-module large battery pack also found in the GMC Hummer EV, boasts the highest claimed peak charging power among all Electric vehicles currently available in the US. According to the manufacturer, this EV, with an EPA range of 450 miles, can draw up to 350 kilowatts from a suitable charger. However, during a recent independent charging session, it surpassed this figure and displayed remarkable consistency throughout the charging process.
Out of Spec Reviews conducted a charging test on a Silverado EV 4WT, starting from a flat battery, and observed the vehicle immediately drawing the maximum advertised 350 kW after preconditioning. At one point during the session, the charging station indicated a power draw of over 360 kW, although the truck itself registered a consistent 349–350 kW, likely accounting for charging losses.
The standout feature of this charging session wasn’t just the impressive peak charging speed but the remarkable consistency in power delivery. The Silverado EV maintained over 340 kW of charging power until reaching a 30% state of charge, gradually tapering off but still staying above 220 kW until 75%. Even beyond 75%, the charging power remained impressive, with the vehicle pulling at least 50 kW even after reaching 90%.
The Silverado EV’s 200+ kilowatt-hour battery took just over one hour and 15 minutes to charge from empty to full capacity, outperforming many other electric vehicles with smaller batteries. It excelled in replenishing range compared to other electric pickups on the market, as demonstrated in a video by Out of Spec Reviews.
What sets the Silverado EV apart is its ability to charge quickly despite not operating at 800 volts, a characteristic commonly associated with fast-charging EVs. The vehicle features a split battery pack comprised of two 400-volt packs that work in parallel during regular operation but switch to series configuration for charging, doubling the voltage for rapid charging.
Moreover, the Silverado EV’s impressive charging capabilities showcase its efficiency and advancement in electric vehicle technology, setting a benchmark for high-speed charging and range replenishment in the EV market.
