Rivian Plans To Make Up To 155,000 R2 SUVs Annually In Illinois
Rivian announced plans to produce up to 155,000 R2 SUVs per year at its plant in Normal, Illinois. This move demonstrates the company’s high expectations for the new model and its potential to increase sales and market reach.
During its first-quarter earnings report, Rivian detailed upcoming enhancements to its Illinois factory, which will raise total production capacity to 215,000 units. This includes the R2 as well as existing products like the R1T pickup truck, the R1S SUV, and the commercial delivery van used by Amazon.
The R2, priced at around $45,000 and set to launch in early 2026, holds the key to Rivian’s future success. Positioned to compete with Tesla‘s Model Y in the U.S. market, the R2 is expected to attract more buyers and drive higher sales volumes compared to Rivian’s previous offerings.
Looking ahead, Rivian’s manufacturing capacity will be flexible, with the ability to produce up to 85,000 R1 vehicles, 65,000 commercial vans, and 155,000 R2s. The company aims to adjust production lines to meet demand effectively.
While Rivian’s production numbers are set to increase significantly with the introduction of the R2, the company CFO notes that full-scale production is necessary for sales to soar. Globally, the R2 is projected to achieve impressive sales figures comparable to top Electric vehicles in the market.
