You Can Have A Classic Toyota Land Cruiser EV But It Will Cost $292K
Converting an old car into an electric vehicle can be a straightforward and cost-effective process if you have mechanical knowledge. By sourcing used parts and doing the work yourself, you can create an electric vehicle that meets your needs. However, for those looking for a premium, professionally done EV conversion, the costs can escalate into the six-figure range.
UK-based company Inverted has added electric power to the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series (the J40) through their innovative “engineering first approach.” This conversion is available for all model variants, including the short-wheelbase J40, mid-wheelbase J43, and long-wheelbase J45.
Each converted vehicle is equipped with a 53-kilowatt-hour battery pack, providing a range of around 150 miles on a full charge. In a unique feature, Inverted’s conversion includes DC fast charging at up to 75 kilowatts, allowing for a quick 20% to 80% charge in under half an hour.
The conversion retains the original transmission, replacing the combustion engine with an electric motor delivering 215 horsepower and over 250 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle can still be manually shifted, offering versatility for different driving conditions and terrains.
Inverted also offers a high-performance option featuring a 320-hp Tesla motor, providing a significant boost in power and torque. This upgrade necessitates the removal of the original transmission but still maintains off-road capabilities.
All Inverted vehicles undergo a full restoration, with revised interiors featuring premium materials, advanced technology like Apple CarPlay, a premium sound system, reverse camera, and air conditioning. Customers can further customize their vehicles, though additional upgrades will increase the base price, starting at $240,000 plus VAT, totaling $292,000 excluding the vehicle cost.
