Plug-In Car Sales In Germany Increased 8% In April 2024
In Germany, new passenger car registrations in April saw a 20% year-over-year increase to 243,102, reaching a total of 937,887 registrations in the first four months of the year, up 8% compared to the previous year.
While plug-in electric car sales improved last month, it was primarily due to the resurgence of plug-in hybrids, with all-electric car sales remaining stagnant year-over-year. This is concerning given the absence of EV incentives in 2024.
In 2023, Germany registered nearly 700,000 new plug-in cars, a 16% decline from 2022. The current year has seen 171,125 registrations so far, a slight 1.5% decrease year-over-year.
In April, new plug-in electric car registrations totaled 44,803, marking an 8% increase year over year. However, the market share dropped to 18.4% from 20.5% due to the overall market expanding at a faster rate.
Battery-electric car registrations declined by 0.2% year-over-year to 29,668, resulting in a market share reduction to 12.2% from 14.7% a year ago. In contrast, plug-in hybrid car registrations increased by 28% to 15,135.
So far in 2024, plug-in electric car registrations have reached 171,125, down 1.5% year-over-year, accounting for 18.2% of the total market, compared to 20% in the previous year.
Leading brands in new plug-in car registrations last month included Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi, with Tesla trailing in eighth place with only 1,637 units.
Mercedes-Benz continues to dominate the plug-in segment year-to-date, while Volkswagen is closely following in the all-electric car category. Tesla, although a key player, faces stiff competition from German automakers.
The Tesla Model Y remains the top-selling all-electric car in Germany so far in 2024, followed by Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5, Skoda Enyaq iV, and Audi Q4 e-tron with promising results in April.
Looking ahead, the market anticipates a potential resurgence in growth and an increase in market share for rechargeable cars later in 2024.
