Plug-In Car Sales In Germany Weakened Again In February 2024
In Germany, new passenger car registrations in February totaled 217,388, a 5.4% increase compared to the previous year. Over the first two months of the year, registrations surpassed 430,000, marking an almost 12% increase.
However, the performance of plug-in Electric cars in the market showed mixed results. All-electric car sales slightly decreased, while plug-in hybrids experienced some growth.
The total new plug-in electric car registrations in February reached 42,054, a 5% decline year-over-year. The market share also decreased to 19.3% from 21.5% a year ago. Despite this, the segment has previously benefited from substantial incentives.
Battery-electric car registrations decreased by 15% to 27,479, representing a 12.6% market share. Plug-in hybrid car sales, on the other hand, increased by 22% year-over-year to 14,575.
So far this year, new passenger plug-in electric car registrations amounted to approximately 79,000, an 11% increase, which constitutes around 18% of the total volume.
The Tesla Model Y emerged as the top-selling all-electric car model in Germany, with 7,801 new registrations year-to-date. Additionally, two MEB-based models from the Volkswagen Group, the Skoda Enyaq iV (2,717 units) and the Audi Q4 e-tron (2,313 units), secured notable positions among the top all-electric models in 2024.
Overall, Mercedes-Benz leads in plug-in registrations after the first two months of the year, with Tesla dominating the all-electric car segment despite a 23% decrease in volume year-over-year.
