Honda Modified a Peterbilt to Run on Hydrogen Fuel Cells
The latest concept from Honda is a Class 8 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck, a departure from their usual small vehicles. The truck will be showcased at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Las Vegas on May 20. It features three fuel-cell systems generating a total of 240 kW of energy, powering electric motors. The truck can reach a top speed of 70 mph and travel 400 miles before refueling, even when fully loaded at 82,000 pounds.
Honda is currently producing these fuel cells at a joint plant in Michigan with General Motors, aiming to attract potential partners for a hydrogen-fueled future. The company hopes to collaborate with businesses and customers to bring these fuel cell solutions to the North American market.
Despite Honda’s involvement in the fuel cell technology, the truck itself is a Peterbilt model. It resembles a 579EV but with modified internals for the fuel cell system. Speculation remains about any co-development between Honda and Peterbilt for this concept.
