Will We Soon Be Able To Buy An Electric Akira Bike?
The silver screen has inspired countless individuals, myself included, to embrace the two-wheeled lifestyle. While there are plenty of sensible choices in movie bikes, such as Top Gun’s GPZ900R, or the various bikes in Mission: Impossible and James Bond movies, there are other bikes that seem unattainable for us average folks.
I’m referring to one-of-a-kind machines like those ridden by Batman and Shotaro Kaneda from Akira. However, the unattainability of these bikes is changing with the introduction of custom-made bikes inspired by the Akira bike, but none from an actual manufacturer. Until now.
Thai manufacturer Rapid aims to make this dream a reality with its electric motorcycle named the K-1988. While currently just a concept, Rapid’s owner, Smartech Motor, intends to market the K-1988 as a production model. The bike, showcased at the Bangkok International Motor Show, takes inspiration from the Akira series, though with some subtle differences to avoid copyright issues.
The K-1988, likely named after Kaneda and the release year of the Akira film, boasts impressive specs. It features a 15kW electric motor, delivering around 20 horsepower and a top speed of 87 mph. The bike offers a range of 124 miles on a single charge, making it ideal for urban use. Charging the bike fully takes approximately two hours.
Equipped with modern technology like traction control, ABS, and dual full-color TFT displays, the K-1988 also includes an LED headlight reminiscent of the Akira bike. With these features and specifications, the K-1988 stands as a promising electric motorcycle concept, ready to hit the market soon.
