Dynamics of the electric car market
In April, Ukrainians bought 6,700 new and used electric cars. This is significantly more (by as much as 102.5%) than last April 2023, and 5.4% more than the previous month.
The increase in the volume of trades of cars of the BEV group this time is caused by a significant jump in the number of purchase and sale agreements (2,643 in April against 1,951 in March), which in turn is caused by other, non-market factors.
Taking into account the fact that about 40% of transactions are “virtual” in terms of domestic resales, let's continue the review of the electric car segment based on available official data.
Even despite the mentioned external factors, imported used electric cars retained their advantage in terms of share (and quantity): 50.1% of the market, the number of first registrations – 3,346 units.
On the domestic market, 2,643 purchase and sale agreements for electric vehicles were concluded, which is a share of 39.5%.
10.4% of electric cars (695 units) were bought new, after the record in February, when the number of new electric cars crossed the one thousand mark, their sales volumes are gradually decreasing every month.
Among the total number of electric cars in April, 99% were cars, 1% (66 units) were trucks.
Park: the first 100 thousand!
As of the beginning of May 2024, according to the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of automobiles with electric engines is 102,372 units registered in Ukraine (excluding those deregistered due to culling and export abroad). This number includes 99,997 cars, 2,369 trucks and 6 buses. Only 3 cars were missing in order to talk about the first hundred thousand not only in the general fleet, but also in the segment of battery-powered passenger cars – but this reason for uncorking a bottle of sparkling wine will obviously have to be postponed until next month.
Electric cars are a domestic market
For a long time, three brands remained the leaders in the Ukrainian domestic market of electric cars, but now we can talk about “two and a half” – since Volkswagen has noticeably lagged behind its rivals. However, the competition between Nissan, which managed to hold the lead for almost 10 years thanks to the most affordable and therefore the most popular electric car Nissan Leaf-I, and Tesla, whose electric cars are one of the best, and their prices have also dropped dramatically, was not a joke. The difference of just a few cars (five, to be exact) hints that no one will be able to name the leader of the next period with 100 percent certainty. Why? Because the second generation of “Leaf” is gaining popularity, the prices of which have also noticeably “dropped”.
Instead, the e-Golf from Volkswagen is unfortunately equipped with a traction battery of a relatively small capacity, which is enough for 100-150 kilometers of mileage (in used cars), and there are no “enhanced” versions that would be able to compete with the second-generation Leaf in its price range. which has 40- and 60-kilowatt batteries. And although “Golf” is not the only support of the German brand, the ID model line is still in a different price group, right on the edge of the mass market in the “electro” segment.

The recent abolition of VAT on electric trucks has not had much of an impact on their import volumes so far. In April, 42 such units arrived, less than in March (47 units), but slightly more than, for example, in February (19 units) and January (25 units) of this year. However, similar volumes were also recorded last year (without benefits) – there were up to 39 newly arrived electric traction trucks per month. In this sub-segment, it is unlikely that there will be any reason to talk about any breakthroughs or even more records in the near future.
