According to reports from a number of Chinese media, Jaguar Land Rover will use hybrid and electric platforms represented by the Chery Exeed brand. The use of Chery technologies will allow Jaguar Land Rover to make the development and production of new electric vehicles cheaper and faster.
Jaguar will be the first brand to use the Exeed electric platform and could introduce its first model based on this platform as early as the second half of 2024. While a Chery spokesman denied a deal with Jaguar Land Rover to use the company's platforms, the Chinese automaker's chairman said two European luxury brands want to use its platform.
Jaguar Land Rover and Chery have deep ties in China and have operated a 50:50 joint venture since 2012. They produce models such as Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar XFL.
The British automaker aims to become an all-electric brand by 2030. It remains unclear whether future JLR models built on the new platform from the Exeed brand will be available outside of China, or if they will only be sold in the local market.
The platform sharing agreement between Jaguar and Chery would not be the first of its kind between a European automaker and a Chinese automaker. Volkswagen will invest $700 million to acquire a 4.99% stake in Xpeng and will work with the company to develop two new electric vehicles for the Chinese market. Stellantis is also investing $1.5 billion in Leapmotor to acquire a 20% stake in the Chinese automaker.
