In a new logistics concept, Mercedes-Benz has combined the capabilities of the eSprinter van and an electric cargo bike. In collaboration with Berlin-based cargo bike manufacturer Onomotion, Mercedes-Benz is combining an all-electric van and an electric cargo bike to create a seamless supply chain.
Such an eSprinter becomes a mobile microdepot. He brings prepackaged goods in special containers, and couriers on cargo bikes then deliver orders to the front door. It only takes a few minutes to transfer goods to the ONO electric cargo bike.
Thanks to this, the eSprinter does not have long downtimes and can immediately continue working – either to the next cargo bike or to deliver the cargo itself. This method of delivery increases efficiency and shortens the time of fulfillment of orders in both urban and rural areas.
The innovative logistics concept is suitable for a wide range of industries – from courier service, express parcel service to large bakeries or food suppliers.
Shipments can be pre-picked at the logistics center according to the delivery route and loaded into Onomotion's interchangeable wheeled containers. An all-electric van then transports them to a transfer point where they are loaded onto an electric bike. Special containers on wheeled platforms offer a loading volume of more than two cubic meters and a load capacity of up to 200 kilograms.
They can be flexibly configured for different applications such as parcel delivery. For this, Mercedes?Benz Sustaineer has developed an integrated lifting arm specially designed for these containers. The container lifter is hydraulically operated, has recessed rollers, and can be controlled electronically with a hand transmitter. This allows you to load and unload containers quickly, safely and effortlessly.
Two containers fit into the new eSprinter, configured as a long panel van with a high roof. However, there is still enough space for a racking system and additional bulky cargo. The racking system can be accessed at any time (even when the containers are loaded) through the right side door.
The ONO e-cargo cyclist sits in a weatherproof cab and can even cycle along cycle paths to any doorstep without looking for a parking space. This speeds up delivery.
The courier also has to walk less. Since the shipments are packed according to the route, no searching or regrouping is necessary.
The ONO electric cargo bike has a range of up to 25 kilometers, and the battery with a capacity of 1.4 kWh provides a speed of up to 6 km/h. It can be replaced in seconds. A replaceable battery on board effectively doubles the range. Charging is possible through a standard grounded outlet.
Additional benefits: a cargo bike does not require a driver's license. This makes deployment planning more flexible and makes it easier to find new employees. In addition, a cargo bike requires significantly less space when moving, which can lead to a greater acceptance of delivery vehicles, especially in the city.
