Renault Considering Bringing Back the Classic Espace Model
Renault made history in 1984 with the introduction of the Espace, a groundbreaking vehicle that established a new class in Europe. The original Espace was a large saloon with a unique ‘one-box’ design, offering space for seven passengers and innovative features like removable seats to create additional cargo space.
Retro Wave in the Electric Car Market
Renault has been riding the retro wave in the electric car market, with plans to revive classic designs like the Renault 5 and a potential electric Twingo. This nostalgic approach to design has sparked interest in resurrecting the iconic Espace model from 1984.
Potential for an Electric Espace MPV
Olivier Brosse, Renault’s global head of Ampr medium platform, revealed that the possibility of bringing back the Espace as a van is being considered. The new Espace model would be based on the Ampr medium architecture and could rival Electric vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.Buzz and Kia EV9 in the seven-seater segment.
Technical Challenges and Considerations
One of the main challenges in developing an electric Espace would be the vehicle’s weight and drive system. Brosse mentioned that once a car exceeds 2.0-2.2 tonnes, it would need to be rear-driven from a technical perspective. All-wheel drive is also a possibility, while front-wheel drive is ruled out.
Future Prospects and Possibilities
While the concept of an electric Espace is still in the early stages, Renault’s CEO sees the reinvention of classic designs as “irresistible.” With the benefits of electric car platforms, Renault could optimize internal packaging and have more design flexibility for a potential electric Espace.
As Renault continues to expand its electric car portfolio, the revival of the Espace model could be a significant move in capturing the market’s interest and nostalgia for the iconic van from 1984.
