Elon Musk said that Tesla programmatically blocked the range of the cheapest modification electric crossover Model Y called Standard Range RWD and plans to return cars from 65 to 97 km of range for the money. Owners are expected to pay between $1,500 and $2,000.
For several years, Tesla offered a basic version of the electric crossover with a “limited” range.
It turns out that instead of developing the new car with a specially designed low-capacity battery pack, the automaker decided instead to use the same longer-range batteries as the more expensive versions and programmatically limit their capacity.
Musk said Tesla is currently “working through regulatory approvals” to enable the new option for affordable crossovers.
Earlier it was noted that Tesla stopped accepting orders for the cheapest version of the Model Y with a range of 418 km. Instead, Tesla began offering customers a new rear-wheel drive option with a range of 515 km.
