We Check Out The Highest Powered EV Charging Station In The U.S.
In the quest for a widespread transition from combustion vehicles to EVs, the lack of easily accessible high-speed public charging poses a major challenge. Achieving this goal will require a collaborative effort from various companies offering unique solutions. Recently, I came across Gravity Charging, a new player in the industry that has opened its first charging site in the heart of New York City, potentially reshaping the game.
Traditionally, large electric vehicle charging sites are found in spacious parking lots, but in cities like New York, real estate constraints make it difficult to set up such infrastructure. Gravity Charging, however, claims to have found a workaround for this issue. With innovative compact chargers mounted on walls near the ceiling, they have optimized space in parking garages, allowing vehicles to park right up to the wall. Their ceiling-mounted cable management system ensures that the charging cable can reach any part of the vehicle parked in the spot.
Located just one block from Times Square, the Gravity Charging Center boasts twenty-four chargers capable of delivering up to 500 kW consistently over an extended period. This reliability sets them apart in the industry, making them a promising player in the field of DC fast charging.
Founder and CEO Moshe Cohen explained that their software efficiently manages the surplus power of the block, eliminating the need for costly building upgrades. Gravity has plans for expansion across the country, including inner-city garages, public parking lots, and curbside charging with their pole-mounted charging solution.
I look forward to delving deeper into Gravity’s power management technology in a follow-up interview with Cohen. If they can replicate their success on 42nd Street in other parts of the city and country without hefty utility upgrades, Gravity could revolutionize the DC fast charging sector.
