The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Will Race at Pikes Peak
Hyundai will showcase the performance capabilities of the Ioniq 5 N by bringing four of them to the Pikes Peak event this year. Two of the vehicles will be in production-spec, while the other two will be modified. The production models will have some interior tweaks, including the removal of rear seats to accommodate a roll cage for safety. The driver’s seat will be upgraded to a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat with a six-point Sabelt racing harness, along with a fire suppression system.
The Ioniq 5 N will retain its dual-motor setup with up to 641 horsepower when overboost is activated. In regular mode, the total output is a powerful 601 hp, allowing for a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.25 seconds and a top speed of 162 mph. Paul Dallenbach, an 11-time PPIHC winner, will drive one of the production models, while the other will be driven by rookie Ron Zaras. The two modified vehicles will be piloted by WRC driver Dani Sordo and four-time Pikes Peak champion Robin Shute.
The vehicles will race the 12.42-mile course with 156 turns, climbing an elevation gain of 4,725 feet to finish at 14,115 feet above sea level. While the current record at Pikes Peak is held by Romain Dumas in the Volkswagen I.D. R, it is unlikely that the Ioniq 5 N will come close to breaking it due to the purpose-built nature of the VW. The Ioniq 5 N will sport an N livery for the race in Colorado, and the event is set to take place on June 23.
