Ford‘s Electric Pikes Peak Race Truck Makes Three Whole Tons of Downforce
Ford is set to make a return to Pikes Peak next month with an electric pickup truck that has been teased as an “EV demonstrator” since March. The Blue Oval has now revealed the truck in its entirety, showcasing its ability to generate 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour.
The SuperTruck Demonstrator achieves this impressive figure with its aggressive aerodynamics, including a massive goose-neck wing that looms above the cab’s roof, a wide front splitter, outlets behind the front wheels, and a substantial rear diffuser. Ford collaborated with STARD to develop the truck.
Ford did not provide further details about the electric SuperTruck beyond its downforce capabilities. However, the truck bears some styling similarities to the SuperVan 4.2 that Ford used in last year’s hillclimb event, featuring a massive wing and an aggressive aero kit. The SuperVan 4.0 had four motors generating 1,972 horsepower, and the new pickup could have a similar setup.
This electric demonstrator is Ford’s second after the F-150 Switchgear released earlier this year, built in partnership with RTR. The company enhanced the off-road capability of the production Lightning platform by adding skid plates, composite body panels, and a new suspension.
Ford is expected to continue teasing the pickup leading up to the event starting on June 23. Romain Dumas, the current Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record holder, will be driving the Ford truck. In addition to Ford, Hyundai will also have an EV presence at the event with a modified Hyundai Ioniq 5 participating in the famous hillclimb course later in June.
