Jaguar-Land Rover To Sign EV Platform Sharing Deal With China’s Chery
The media in China has reported that Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is nearing a deal with Chery, the third-largest automaker in China, to access its EV platforms. This comes as no surprise since the two companies are already collaborating on car production in China.
A representative from the company, quoted by Reuters during a recent presentation, confirmed the collaboration on the Chery E0X architecture for high-end cars. This new EV platform-sharing agreement indicates that two premium European automakers are interested in utilizing Chery’s technology.
According to CNEVPost, JLR plans to manufacture hybrid and fully Electric vehicles using the Chery platform. These future JLR EVs and PHEVs are expected to share the platform and technology with vehicles from Chery’s Exeed luxury brand. However, specific details have not been disclosed, including the timeline for the release of the first Chery-based JLR plug-ins. JLR has announced its intention to launch six pure-electric models by 2026 across all its brands, with the first being an all-electric Range Rover set for a reveal later this year.
Jaguar-Land Rover, under the ownership of India’s Tata Motors since 2008, has only produced the Jaguar I-Pace EV to date. The company had been developing a fully electric Jaguar XJ luxury sedan, but the project was terminated near completion. This move has left JLR behind its luxury rivals from Germany, who already have extensive lineups of EVs.
Following a rebrand last year, JLR declared that Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar would function as separate sub-brands. The joint venture with Chery in China, established in 2012, oversees local production of select Jaguar and Land Rover models.
JLR aims to sell only EVs after 2023 and achieve carbon net zero emissions by 2039 through an Open Innovation strategy. This strategy involves collaborating with third parties to reduce costs and accelerate development in electrification, connectivity, and sustainability.
In summary, the partnership between JLR and Chery signifies a step towards advancing JLR’s EV offerings to compete with its luxury rivals in the rapidly evolving automotive market.
