Tesla Full Self-Driving Comes Out Of Beta, But Must Be Supervised
A year ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the Full Self-Driving software would no longer be in beta with the release of FSD V12. Now, the automaker has fulfilled that promise by dropping the “Beta” tag from the software’s name, rebranding it as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised).” This change seems to signify more than just a name adjustment.
Despite Tesla not making an official announcement about the name change, it is evident in the software notes. The modification aims to provide clarity regarding the current level of vehicle autonomy, emphasizing that the car still requires supervision, even though it can make certain driving decisions independently. The release notes caution users to remain attentive and not become complacent while using the software.
Various regulatory bodies have criticized Tesla’s branding of its Level 2 semi-autonomous driving feature. The controversy surrounding the naming has led to legal disputes, with some authorities calling the branding “misleading and irresponsible.” Nevertheless, Tesla seems to be moving forward with the rebranding as it gains confidence in the software’s wide release.
In addition to the name change, Tesla has also expanded the availability of FSD by offering a one-month free trial to all eligible owners. This move not only showcases the software’s capabilities but also aims to increase adoption of the $12,000 add-on. Overall, despite the ongoing debate over the naming of the feature, Tesla appears to be progressing with the development and deployment of its Full Self-Driving technology.
