The First Standalone Mercedes-AMG EV Has NA Miata-Looking Fake Taillights
Beneath the intricate camouflage and distinctive Miata-like taillights hides Mercedes’ first model on the AMG.EA platform. This sports sedan was designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle to replace the current AMG 4-Door Coupe, which has already been hybridized. The new model will ditch the combustion engine entirely in favor of a pure EV setup.
The prototype’s swoopy rear hints at a more practical liftback design rather than a traditional sedan, similar to the outgoing model’s five-door hatchback configuration. Teaser images reveal an active rear spoiler and front canards, with the final version likely sharing characteristics with the 2022 Vision AMG Concept.
This upcoming model will compete with the Porsche Taycan, offering a more dynamic driving experience than AMG variants of the EQE. It will utilize disc-shaped axial-flux electric motors known for their power density, size, and weight advantages over traditional motors. Affalterbach has disclosed that one motor can produce 480 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque while weighing only 53 pounds.
Expectations for the AMG.EA-based model include a slimmer, higher-energy-density battery pack and a more spacious cabin due to the bespoke EV architecture. By elongating the wheelbase and reducing front and rear overhangs, Mercedes aims to provide ample interior room without compromising on ICE-to-EV adaptations. Testing in Sweden under extreme conditions, this sporty EV will undergo further evaluations worldwide before its anticipated late 2024 or early 2025 debut.
The high-performance electric model is unlikely to hit showrooms this year, but its official unveiling could take place later in 2024 or early 2025, following rigorous testing on various terrains.
