The Mazda Arata Is Another Attempt at an Electric SUV
At the Auto China 2024 in Beijing, the highlight of Mazda’s exhibit is the rear-wheel-drive electric 6 sedan. Alongside this premiere, the Arata electric SUV concept was also unveiled and is set to enter production by the end of the following year. Developed by Changan Mazda, a joint venture between Changan Automobile and Mazda, the Arata may be renamed for its production version, potentially using an alphanumeric name like “EZ-60.”
The Arata, meaning “new” or “fresh” in Japanese, showcases an appealing electric SUV design that may resemble an existing model. While the EZ-6 is expected to be based on the Changan Depal SL03, the EZ-60 might draw inspiration from the Changan Depal S7. The Mazda sedan and SUV pair exhibit upscale aesthetics, possibly indicating a higher price range.
The Arata is an all-electric vehicle for now, in contrast to the EZ-6 which will offer a plug-in hybrid variant upon its launch in China this year. Adhering to the Kodo design language, the SUV features a striking exterior with sleek lighting elements and a luminous grille. The illuminated “Mazda” script on the sides adds a distinctive touch.
As a concept model, the Arata ditches traditional mirrors and door handles, incorporating cameras for rear visibility and entry. Sporting a bold spoiler with an integrated third brake light, the SUV’s design elements, including the quarter panel, provide a unique aesthetic. Mazda has not confirmed plans to sell these models outside of China, where they will be produced.
Despite minimal progress in electrification, Mazda recognizes the inevitability of Electric vehicles and the need to embrace them for future sustainability. While the MX-30 hasn’t achieved commercial success, the brand’s foray into electrification signals a commitment to staying relevant in the evolving automotive landscape.
