Dynamics of the electric car market
In May, Ukrainians bought 7,500 new and used electric cars. This is significantly more (by as much as 88.8%) than it was in May of last year 2023, and by 11.7% more than it was in April.
Yes, a certain role was played by the growth of “re-registrations” of motor vehicles caused by the new “mobilization” laws, but this factor affects only the domestic market, other sub-segments (sales of new and import of used) do not depend on it. So the fact (more on that below) that the mentioned two sub-segments also showed growth, shows that the introduction of electricity supply according to schedules did not have too much impact on the buyers of electric cars. After all, a conventionally average passenger car with a battery capacity of about 50 kWh and a daily mileage of 30-40 km will need charging no more than once a week, so under such circumstances you can find a time when electricity is present and charge the battery.
Recently, another factor appeared – the new price for electricity for household consumers. However, we will consider this issue (how it can affect the market) in a separate publication.
Imported used electric cars occupied 47.5% of the market, the number of first registrations – 3,546 units.
On the domestic market, 3,216 purchase and sale agreements for electric vehicles were concluded, which is a share of 43.1%.
9.4% of electric cars (705 units) were bought new. After the record in February, when the number of new electric cars passed the mark of one thousand units, the volume of their sales is gradually decreasing every month.
Among the total number of electric cars in May, 99% were passenger cars, 1% (72 units) were trucks.
Park of electric cars
As of the beginning of May 2024, according to the calculations of the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of vehicles with electric engines is 106,893 units registered in Ukraine (excluding those deregistered due to culling and export abroad). This number includes 104,176 cars, 2,711 trucks and 6 buses. The actual number may be lower, since not all facts of destruction or theft of electric cars in the temporarily occupied territories have been documented, and there is also no exact number of those cars that have gone abroad, while not issuing a deregistration in connection with this circumstance.
Electric cars are a domestic market
The leaders in the Ukrainian domestic market of electric cars remain Tesla, whose electric cars are among the best in terms of characteristics and capabilities, and their prices have fallen extremely low, and Nissan, which managed to hold the lead for almost 10 years thanks to the most affordable and therefore the most popular electric car, the Nissan Leaf.
Volkswagen occupied an intermediate position between the leaders and the “peloton”, with a share of more than ten percent (15%), but less than the two brands just mentioned. The share of others is less than 5%.
