Ford has announced that it is delaying the launch of next-generation electric vehicles at its Ontario assembly plant and plans to significantly expand its hybrid model line.
The new three-row electric SUV will be presented in 2027 – two years later than originally planned by Ford. Representatives of the automaker noted that the additional time allows “the consumer market of three-row electric cars to develop further.”
Meanwhile, Ford said progress at the Tennessee EV plant is on schedule. The company is installing 4,000 tons of stamping equipment for Ford's next electric pickup truck. The American automaker plans to start deliveries of the new electric pickup truck in 2026 and will gradually increase production.
It is noted that Ford is also changing its strategy, trying to expand the model range of hybrids. By the end of the decade, the company plans to offer a hybrid version for every model in the Ford lineup.
Sales of Ford electric cars in the first three months of the year increased by 86%. This turned out to be enough to take the second place in the electric car market after Tesla. In the first quarter of 2024, the American automaker sold 20,233 electric vehicles, ahead of rival General Motors with 16,425 cars delivered.
The Ford F-150 Lightning remained the best-selling electric pickup truck, with sales up 80% over last year. Mustang Mach-E sales were up 77% year-over-year to 9,589 units, making it the second best-selling electric crossover in the U.S. behind Tesla's Model Y.
