When the Rivian R2 was unveiled earlier this year, many car enthusiasts were excited about the new electric model. This machine promised to keep all the characteristic features and most of the capabilities of the R1, but in a more compact and affordable format.
However, as we approach 2026, it has become known that the Rivian R2 will likely lose some of the interesting features that were shown on the prototype a few months ago.
One of the last features that will reportedly be eliminated is the flat-folding front seats. This could make the cabin ideal for camping or transporting oversized items. The information comes from RivianTrackr, who cites a comment from Brian Geis, Rivian's chief engineer of special projects.
According to sources, Rivian faced difficulties in designing the folding mechanism of the front seats in such a way that it was compatible with the steering wheel and at the same time did not increase the cost of the car. This design probably didn't meet federal safety regulations either.
It looks like this isn't the only feature that will be missing from R2. Earlier this year, Rivian announced that the compact SUV would not get air suspension. This will reduce costs and allow the automaker to reach its desired starting price of $45,000.
