Gone are the days of miniature Smart cars, the company's latest models are getting bigger. The new concept car with the concise name #5 announces a new production model that will be released later this year. The company does not name the exact dimensions of the car, but reports that the concept is a real mid-size crossover.
The compact crossover is very similar to the futuristic version of the Mercedes-Benz GLB with off-road elements. Smart also added to the concept car massive protective pads and a stick from branches. The “adventure” theme of the concept is emphasized by an integrated winch and a folding rear step for access to the roof.
The company calls the new car “the most versatile Smart of all time.” It is known that the novelty has an all-wheel drive system thanks to a pair of electric motors. It is noted that Concept #5 received a traction battery with a capacity of more than 100 kWh.
The electric car uses 800-volt fast charging technology: it only takes 15 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent. A fully charged electric crossover can travel more than 550 km on a single charge of the traction battery.
It is known that the mid-size crossover will take part in the Auto China 2024 exhibition in Beijing. The serial version of the new electric car from Smart will debut in the second half of the year.
As a reminder, Smart has not been a subsidiary of Mercedes since 2019. It is a 50:50 joint venture between the German brand and Geely.
