Dynamics of the electric car market
In March, Ukrainians purchased 6,300 new and used electric cars. This is actually twice as much (by 99.6%) as it was last March 2023, and 3.6% more than it was in February 2024.
After a slight decrease in the volume of trades in this segment at the beginning of the year, then the chart looks more and more like a “statistical plateau”. There is probably some potential for growth in the electric vehicle segment, but it is not as powerful as it was a year or two ago, and statistics show that the saturation point of the market is getting closer here.
What does the electric car market look like in Ukraine? Used imported electric cars predominate here, the share of such cars was 55.1%, and the number of first registrations was 3,494 units.
In the domestic market, 1,947 purchase and sale agreements for electric vehicles were concluded, which is a share of 30.7%.
14.2% of electric cars (898 units) were bought new, which is less than last month's result, when the number of new vehicles crossed the one thousand mark for the first time.
Among the total number of electric cars in March, 99.3% were passenger cars, 0.7% (47 units) were trucks.
As of the beginning of 2024, according to the calculations of the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of automobiles with electric engines is 98,328 units registered in Ukraine (excluding those deregistered due to scrapping and export abroad): 95,999 passenger cars, 2327 trucks and 5 buses. The numbers suggest that supporters of electric mobility next month have every chance to celebrate the first hundred thousand electric cars in the Ukrainian fleet.
Electric cars are a domestic market
Three brands remain the leaders in the Ukrainian domestic electric car market. Until recently, the strongest competition was between Nissan, which managed to hold the championship for almost 10 years thanks to the most affordable and therefore the most popular electric car Nissan Leaf, but it was overtaken by Tesla. And this time, for the first time, there was a change of leader in the domestic market – the American brand took the lead, with a solid share of 26% and 502 purchase and sale agreements.
Now it does not look like Volkswagen, with a share of the secondary market of 13.2% and 255 cars, could confidently compete with these two manufacturers, but we should not lose sight of the fact that our market is actively replenished with relatively affordable cars of this brand produced in China , as well as the fact that the ID model range is constantly expanding. So in some time it is quite possible that the third position of Volkswagen will change to a higher one.
Also, although the numbers do not yet confirm this, Hyundai has a good potential – Ioniq and, especially Kona, especially the European versions, will soon be able to increase the sales volume of this Korean brand.
