The fleet of electric vehicles makes up 1.7% of all cars in the EU. According to the observations of Eurostat specialists, the dynamics are impressive – in 2023, 1.5 million new electric vehicles that work only on batteries and are not hybrid models are registered in the EU. The total number of cars that are exclusively electric cars has reached the mark of 4.5 million. This is a 48.5% increase from 2022, when the total number was 3 million.
The number of new registrations of cars with exclusively electric traction is also increasing – 14.6%. According to Eurostat experts, this indicates a continued rapid growth in the use of electric vehicles in the EU. By 2018, electric vehicles accounted for less than 1% of new car registrations. In 2020, the number of such registrations increased to 5.3%, in 2021 – 9%, in 2022 – 12.1%, in 2023 – 14.6%.
Leading countries in the use and purchase of electric vehicles
Residents of Denmark use electric cars the most – 7.1% of all passenger cars used in the country are electric cars. Also, electric cars have gained significant popularity in the following European countries:
- Sweden – 5.9%;
- Luxembourg – 5.1%;
- The Netherlands – 5.0%.
There are 14 European countries among the outsiders in the introduction of electric transport. They have less than 1% saturation of the fleet with electric cars. The lowest indicators are Cyprus, Greece, Poland. In these countries, the number of electric cars is no more than 0.2% of all cars.
