The company Uber and the car manufacturer BYD made a dealas a result of which tens of thousands of drivers will get behind the wheel of new Chinese-made electric cars.
It is noted that 100,000 BYD electric vehicles will soon be registered in countries around the world, particularly in Europe and North America. Europe and Latin America are the first to receive new electric cars, followed by the Middle East, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
There was no mention of the US in Uber's message, and it's not hard to see why. In May, the Biden administration decided to raise tariffs on imported Chinese electric cars to 102.5 percent. But it is not clear how the increased tariffs in Europe could affect the further agreement.
Uber wants all of its cars in US, Canadian and European cities to be electric by 2030. Earlier this year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the goal was unlikely to be met “without stronger action from politicians and companies.” The company previously said that electric vehicles only handle 8.2 percent of Uber rides in North America and 9 percent in Europe.
“This collaboration marks a new era in the electrification of urban mobility, and we look forward to seeing our electric vehicles become commonplace on city streets around the world,” said BYD Americas CEO Stella Lee.
