An SUV Icon Goes Electric
When Mercedes-Benz decided to transform the iconic G-Class SUV into an electric vehicle, there were suggestions within the company to make it smoother and more streamlined for efficiency. However, those voices were met with a resounding “No.”
Introducing the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology (formerly known as the EGQ), a G-Class SUV powered by batteries rather than a traditional engine. This marks a significant departure from the Geländewagen’s traditional design.
The innovative drive concept features four individually controlled electric motors that elevate the off-road performance of the G-Class to new heights. Despite being an electric vehicle, Mercedes was adamant about preserving the iconic design that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1979.
With a large 116-kWh lithium-ion battery and four electric motors delivering 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, the G580 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. It also offers fast DC charging capabilities, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in 32 minutes.
The electric G-Class retains its off-road capabilities, with features like off-road gear reduction, G-Turn rotation function, and intelligent hill ascent and descent modes. It boasts a fording depth of 33.5 inches and can climb up to a 100 percent grade on suitable surfaces.
Inside, the G580 features modern technology, including multiple screens, ambient lighting, and unique sound effects. The Edition One Special Edition will be available in the U.S. as a 2025 model.
Despite its electric powertrain, the G580 stays true to its off-road roots, offering a blend of performance and capability that will likely appeal to G-Class enthusiasts.
