GM’s Supercharger Access Plan Is Still On Schedule, Despite Tesla‘s Layoffs
The entire Supercharger team at Tesla has been fired, causing concern among both EV owners and auto executives about the impact on the industry-wide rollout of North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters and access to the Supercharger network. Currently, only Tesla, Ford, and Rivian EVs have access to America’s premier fast-charging network. However, GM EV owners need not worry as Supercharger access is still on track to be available as originally planned, very soon.
GM’s director of global strategic technology communications, Sanaz Marbley, confirmed that they will stick to the previously announced timeline for granting access to the Supercharger network in spring of 2024. With spring ending on June 20, this means that within the next three weeks, GM’s Bolt, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq will have access to the Supercharger network.
Many EV manufacturers have been transitioning their EVs to the North American Charging Standard (NACS), with Ford being the first to make this move in May 2023. This switch will grant almost every automaker access to Tesla Superchargers, providing consumers with widespread and reliable fast-charging options. Despite the departure of Tesla’s Supercharger team, the rollout of NACS is expected to proceed as scheduled.
The inclusion of GM’s Bolt and Equinox EVs in the Supercharger network is great news for the EV community, especially for those looking for affordable EV options. While Bolts may experience slower overall charging speeds, access to Superchargers will ensure more reliable fast charging in various locations. For the Equinox EV, having access to Superchargers will further enhance its appeal as a top choice for price-conscious consumers.
GM has indicated that there will be more updates to share soon, and we will provide further information as it becomes available. Despite the turmoil at Tesla, the industry-wide transition to the most dependable fast-charging network in the country is still progressing.
