MKBHD Lists Tesla Cybertruck’s Overrated And Underrated Features
Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, believes that the Tesla Cybertruck has already achieved iconic status with its design. However, he considers the bulletproof exterior to be overhyped.
In a recent YouTube video posted on Friday, Brownlee shares his insights after a month of living with Tesla’s new truck. He delves into what aspects of the Cybertruck meet the high expectations and which ones fall short.
Tesla’s F-150 competitor is finally here
After facing numerous delays, Tesla started delivering its Cybertruck electric pickup truck late last year. Despite its polarizing design and various unique features, it remains uncertain if the Cybertruck will achieve significant sales numbers.
One standout feature, according to Brownlee, is the truck’s steer-by-wire system, which he believes is underappreciated. Unlike traditional vehicles, the Cybertruck has no direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels. Instead, steering inputs are translated into actions by motors at the front and rear axles.
This setup allows for a variable steering ratio, enabling sharper wheel pivot at low speeds for easier maneuvering and smoother adjustments at higher speeds. Consequently, there is no need for hand-over-hand steering, resulting in a remarkably agile and responsive driving experience.
“With the combination of variable steering ratio and four-wheel steering, this truck feels like the most nimble and agile vehicle I have ever driven,” Brownlee expressed. “This aspect is often overlooked by many.”
In response to a Cybertruck engineer on X, Brownlee clarified that the steer-by-wire system did not diminish his appreciation for his Porsche 911.
While Brownlee acknowledges the Cybertruck’s bulletproof steel construction, he contends that its 800-volt electrical architecture and 48-volt low-voltage system are more noteworthy. These innovations contribute to the overall lighter weight of Tesla’s truck compared to its competitors due to the utilization of lighter gauge wires.
Regarding performance, Brownlee believes that the Cybertruck’s capabilities are slightly exaggerated. In a demonstration where he raced the Cybertruck against a Porsche 911 Turbo S, he found that while the Cybertruck had a quick start, the 911 outperformed it in a quarter-mile race.
Brownlee also critiques Tesla’s minimalistic approach with the Cybertruck, commenting that it is somewhat overemphasized. He suggests that adding unique features such as physical buttons or a distinct key fob could further differentiate the expensive flagship within Tesla’s lineup.
