Tesla has begun offering new “energy boost” software to buyers of the rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y, which for a certain price allows you to unlock more battery capacity.
As reported by Electrekafter Tesla discontinued the Standard Range version of the Model Y, the company said that the batteries in those models were actually larger than advertised and that it planned to offer a software unlock that would add an additional 65-100 km of range.
The automaker has reportedly received regulatory approval and now it looks like these software updates are ready to roll out. Recently, some Model Y owners started seeing the “Energy Boost” update available in their Tesla app.
Some owners were offered a $1,600 upgrade to add up to 80km, while others were offered a $1,000 upgrade to increase the range to 50km. Currently, the update is only available in the US. Obviously, this is not exactly what Tesla promised – the numbers are slightly lower than the 65-100 km for 1.5-2 thousand dollars that were advertised earlier.
Additionally, the update commentary states that “Ratings are based on internal simulations and will vary depending on factors such as battery age and driving behavior.” It is likely that the real numbers will be somewhat lower than the declared ones.
