IM Motors, a joint venture between SIAC, Alibaba and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, has announced the premiere of “the world's first production car with a solid-state battery.” The presentation of the new product will take place on April 8 during the company's technological conference.
The solid-state unit was installed on the IM L6 electric crossover. It differs from existing batteries in that it has a solid electrolyte. In the case of L6, a patented nano-sized electrolyte of our own development was used. Presumably, it is more resistant to high temperatures and allows the use of ultra-fast charging. The crossover has a voltage of almost 900 V.
The cathode of the battery is coated with a material with an ultra-high nickel content. The anode is made of a new generation silicon-carbon composite material with a high specific density. IM also states that the unit has additional thermal insulation and fire-retardant materials. All this combined makes the battery less prone to flash or explosion.
It is known that the capacity of the solid-state block in IM L6 is 130 kWh. Without recharging, such a crossover will be able to travel 800 km WLTP. It will appear on the market in May this year.
